Social Event:Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundae and Learn how to grow Roses (click for flyer)
Open Garden at Doorakian Residence
When: Sunday, July 16, 12:00 - 3:30 PM, rain or shine
Where: 4 Bandera Drive, Bedford, MA 01730
Event:View George's new daylily flowers and a few roses. Bring your own lunch. Beverages including bottle water, diet pepsi and lemonade with no sugar will be provided.
George will provide a hands on demonstration of how to hybridize your own daylily and rose. He has a mini arboretum of many unusual trees and shrubs. As many of you know, George was the recipient of the most prestigious award that the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) can bestow to an AHS hybridizer, as determined by certified ASH Garden Judges, nationally. His daylily cultivar, "Rose F. Kennedy" won the "Stout Silver Medal" and he will have this medal on hand for your viewing.
This will probably be George's last open garden, as he is downsizing his horticultural activities. You will see daylily flower faces very different than you will see at surrounding nurseries. So, bring your lunch, notepad and/or tape recorder and be in a position to hybridize your own cultivars in your own back yard. As a point of interest, among the new roses planted for this year, the cultivar "Lady in Red" outperformed all other rose cultivars, producing long lasting flowers in a beautiful shade of non fading red - - - you will never forget this one.
The New England Rose Society has been helping people grow better roses since 1940.
Why should I join the New England Rose Society?
Because I am not sure if rose gardening is for me, but I would like to find out.
Because I would like to learn more about roses in a friendly environment.
Because I love roses and want to share my enthusiasm with others.
Who are we?/What is the New England Rose Society?
We are a community of people from all walks of life united by our love and passion for America’s favorite flower — the Rose.
What does the New England Rose Society do?
The New England Rose Society seeks to educate its members and the public in all aspects of rose culture.
In addition to outstanding guest speakers at each meeting, we offer special seminars for in-depth exploration of rose topics, such as soil chemistry, budding and hybridizing, and pest and disease control. Members receive discounts on roses and garden center merchandise.
